WHAT IS NAbSA?
NAbSA, a Global Affairs Canada initiative, supports 19 projects in 30 countries (27 of which are in Sub-Saharan Africa) to develop a gender-responsive framework for nature-based solutions with biodiversity benefits.
NAbSA Objectives
- Enhanced design and implementation of nature-based measures through capacity building and equitable access to knowledge.
- Increased evidence of biodiversity-climate nexus and societal benefits by documenting results, lessons learned and best practices.
- Adoption and scaling-up of nature- positive and gender responsive adaptation actions globally
About NbS for climate adaptation
Nature-based solutions (NbS) for adaptation refer to strategies that use natural ecosystems and processes to address the impacts of climate change while providing co-benefits for biodiversity and human well-being. These approaches leverage the resilience of natural systems to help societies adapt to challenges such as rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and sea-level rise.
IUCN & NbS: The Global Standard for NbS
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) leverage nature and the power of healthy ecosystems to protect people, optimise infrastructure and safeguard a stable and biodiverse future. NbS are defined as “actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services and resilience and biodiversity benefits” (UNEA-5 2020 Resolution).
